What is a Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is a condition where there is a limitation of motion in the joint. This is caused by the inflammatory thickening of the capsule. The stiffness occurs mainly in the shoulder. It is also referred to as adhesive capsulitis. Frozen shoulder is one of the most commonly occurring disorders. The pain can usually be felt exactly above the shoulder joints. This pain slowly radiates to the outer part of the arm and then towards the back of the arm. The pain experienced constantly increases in severity.

In Ayurveda, the frozen shoulder disease is called “Ababahuka”. This is a pure reflection of Vata Roga. The Vata Dosha people tend to absorb the ‘Kapha’ fluids. This absorption in the joints results in Frozen Shoulder. Vata dosha impairs the efficiency at the root of the shoulders, then contracts the veins, and ultimately results in Apabahukam.Apabahukam results in loss of motion of the arms. Ayurveda treatment is very efficient in curing this illness.

It is more prevalent in Diabetes patients and those who have chronic inflammatory arthritis. It can occur to people after any chest or breast surgery. If left uncared for, such long-term shoulder immobility can put the patient at risk and lead to a high risk of frozen shoulder or paralysis.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder:

Pain and Stiffness with gradual limitation in motion, and also worsens with time. The pain is usually worse at night and could even wake a person from sleep. It becomes worse when trying to lie on one side of the affected arm. The patient will find difficulty in doing normal day-to-day tasks. Frozen shoulder usually occurs on one side of the body and can also spread to the other side if untreated. Usually, the pain comes down in some time, but the stiffness makes the pain more severe. This makes it difficult for the affected person to even lift their arm.

Causes Of Frozen Shoulder:

Frozen shoulder disease can occur due to lung or heart problems or diabetes. It is common in people who are aged above 40 years, and also more common in females.

Other reasons include hereditary reasons or prior shoulder joint injury history. Excessive exercise, excessive dry and salty food consumption, night outs, fasting, digestive problems, and stress problems can also be the reasons. Another reason could be synovitis, which is the tearing of the lesion in the muscle around the joints. Trauma history could also be a reason for Frozen Shoulder. And, keeping the arms immobilized in a certain position for longer periods of time can also lead to frozen arm. Cardiac procedures, diabetes, or heart and lung diseases can also lead to frozen shoulder.

Other causes include Inflammation, thickening, scarring, and shrinkage of the muscle capsules surrounding the shoulder joint.  Bursitis, tendinitis, and rotator cuff injury can also lead to severe pain and Frozen shoulder.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Frozen Shoulder:

People with frozen shoulder disease generally apply analgesics, steroids, or anti-inflammatory medications. This relieves the pain for shorter amounts of time but doesn’t solve the root cause of the disease. It’s not a definitive cure for frozen shoulder disease. Thus, this results in recurring pain in different parts of the arm. Thus, the affected individual shifts to using higher dosage medicines or injections repetitively. Hence, rather than eliminating the main cause of the pain, these outer-layer cure actually increases the severity of the disease.

Ayurvedic treatment’s main focus is to eliminate the underlying root cause of the pain. Also, permanent relief from these symptoms is the main goal.

Ayurveda treatment includes the use of herbal medications like  Aristas, Kashayas, and oils both externally and internally. This is to purge the offending toxins permanently from the body. Panchakarma treatment uses oil massage, steam bath, along with Narangakizhi and Nasyam. This unique treatment originated from the Indian state of Kerala. The general recommendation is to take at least 10 days of this massage therapy, followed by a minimum of a 7-day rest period.

Panchkarma and the Kerala therapy are effective if the cause of the frozen shoulder is due to the secondary group. This Ayurvedic treatment helps in balancing the disturbed vata levels in the body.

Massage therapy includes using medicated oil to massage the body with a cotton cloth. Elakizhi is another popular herbal massage that helps in strengthening the muscles. This also facilitates mobility in the shoulder and all the parts of the body.

The duration of the therapy usually depends on the severity of the disease and the symptoms. It can extend between a week and 3 weeks, and might also be months in some cases.

Purification Therapy:

Some toxins present in the body can also lead to pain and immobility in the shoulder and other body parts. Thus, the main concentration is to eliminate these toxins. And the treatment is done to pacify the vata dosha. Nasal insufflations of herbal oils are also sometimes carried out to cure frozen shoulder. These Ayurvedic therapies might vary from person to person based on their constitution and other disease-causing factors. These massages and therapies give a lot of relaxation to the shoulder muscles and surrounding body parts.

To all women out there – By Dr.Mini Nair

Have you ever felt bad for being a girl? Have you ever thought that cooking and homemaking are not what you are made for? Did you find any differences in the way men and women are treated in society? If yes, then go ahead!
In childhood days, all kids, be it a boy or a girl, have only one goal- to play carefree all the time. They love to run around, climb trees, laugh out loud, and make friends all the while. This, in turn, led them to be healthier and energetic.

But, as years roll by, the life of a girl changes manifold. Right from attaining puberty, she will be made to follow new restrictions. And, will also be made to do only household-related work. It includes cleaning the house, helping elders in the family work, cooking, and other routine work. This workload becomes too high, especially after she gets married. Her responsibilities will multiply. She has to learn to survive and thrive in a completely new environment.

How does it affect her physical and mental health?

A woman can be observed multitasking all the time. Always juggling from one place to another and doing the chore continuously. Her day starts by waking up the kids and husband, preparing breakfast and lunch, then cleaning the house, washing clothes, and some women go to work as well, traveling hours and hours. By taking care of all the members of the family, she stops taking care of herself. She does not get time to sit and relax and reflect on her life, as there will be one need or the other.

Thus, her health takes a back seat and goes for a toss, and the impact of this neglect can be seen years later.
A woman would have forgotten the playfulness she had as a kid. The usual lines heard are ‘no time’ for morning walks, no time for relaxation, no time to read and no time for friends. All of these lead to stress and which disturbs the body’s internal balance. Some women will eat only the leftovers of the family, and their stomachs will be similar to a garbage bin.

This small action can lead to bigger health issues if continued. Some of the common symptoms are constant headaches, stomach upset, and sleep disorders. Prolonged stress and carelessness can lead to high blood pressure. One disease left uncared for will lead to another, and thus it progresses. A recent study shows that the number of diseases that women suffer from because of stress is increasing with each passing year. All of her pent-up aggression and negative emotions keep flaring up.

This shows up slowly in her children and other family members. Again, as she reaches menopause, she finds herself fighting with obesity and loneliness. By mid-age itself, she would have lost contact with her friends and find herself disconnected from the outer world.

She will start to wallow in self-pity when she looks at her old photographs and makes herself emotionally vulnerable.
Most Women leave their health to fate. The attitude that “we will face it when it comes” does not hold good in the context of health. Our body does not understand the deadlines, commitment, targets, child’s exams, etc. When the disease strikes with a bigger blow, any effort to restore health will end up in vain.
With the imbalance in eating, sleeping, a woman’s body starts to build up toxins, and this makes her weak and ill again and again. Every one of us should understand that everyone has the right to take a break and take care of themselves.

As owners of this body, we need to take utmost care and attention all the time. We deserve care, love, rest, and all the fun we had in childhood. If we understand this and take special care, then we can look at our old pictures and smile to know that we have aged carefully and gracefully. With proper efforts, all women can live healthily in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. After all, let’s remember that only a healthy woman can create a healthy family and a healthy society.

At Ayurhealing, our Kyguna specialist, Dr.Mini Nair, gives such women a motivating counselling session and gives her empowerment to lead her life happily.
